Chickens can make and recognise over 20 different sounds, and can recognise over 100 individual's faces. Chickens in a natural environment have complex social structures and have distinctly different personalities.
Cows are intelligent, emotional animals with excellent memories. A dairy cow will experience days or weeks of mourning when their calf is taken away for veal.
Pigs have the intelligence of a 3 year old child! They are cheeky, playful animals, much like a dog. Sows make great mums when allowed to act naturally.
Sheep are intelligent and emotional and have fantastic memories, remembering a single face for years.
Fish, despite popular belief, CAN feel pain. Fish and other crustaceans are highly misunderstood creatures, who deserve our respect, just like any other creature.
Unfortunately, these five animals are (arguably) the most exploited and abused animals in Australia.
Do you wonder why we love our cat or our dog or our horse or our budgie, but eat and support the abuse of chickens, cows, pigs, sheep and fish? Well, one of the easiest and most effective ways you can stop contributing to this cruelty, is to stop eating meat, egg and dairy products.
VVSQ (The Vegetarian/Vegan Society of Queensland) promotes this way of life, by distributing thousands upon thousands of brochures each year. They play an extremely active role in the Vegan and Animal Rights community, and are responsible for much of the awareness growing about animal rights and the cruelty free lifestyle. This is why I am running the Bridge to Brisbane - to raise funds for them to help them continue doing what they do best - creating awareness of the plight of animals and in doing so, saving the lives of many.
